Did I overwrite about High Sport pants? Probably. So come for my side-eye curiosity and stay for the swooning over Alan Cumming. It's called range people! Look it up.
Long time follower and fan and just have to say, I am obsessed with your Substack and these emails make me beyond happy. I get sort of OG Lucky Magazine vibes with all of the shopping reccos. The only problem is the volume of Ecom shopping carts I’m building (and eventually buying). As a busy mom living in a particularly uninspired season, reading your newsletter lets me indulge my first loves of fashion and beauty without leaving the couch. Please keep it up! Xo Grace Ps. Can’t wait for the high sport dupe review!
Ahhhhh thank you! Do you remember those great Lucky layouts of like 30 pieces you could style into 219 outfits? God it was great. I still love the book too! I'm glad (ha!) I'm helping build some carts. I find a lot of what's out there so so, so when I find something worth the price (high or low) I get reallllllly excited to share. Thank YOU for making me feel seen!
😍 THE LUCKY MAG BOOK! I had so many little tabs on all of the pages. Totally forgot about that gem. I think I still have an Old Navy denim trench coat featured in one of those layouts in one of the first issues? Kim, Jean, Anne, Elise - the OG masthead was iconic! Time to dig around my parents basement to see what old Lucky gems I can uncover. ❤️
I’m sitting out the HS craze since I’ve lived through earlier iterations of this style. But that’s also why the term “dupe” (which I normally wouldn’t like either) seems inapplicable here. HS makes a beautiful pair at a high price point but didn’t really invent the style?
Ha I kept thinking I owned a similar pair of pants in the late '90s from Express. Agreed that a knit flare isn't original, but I feel like the term dupe (in practice) means more like "same vibe" rather than "exact copy of something original." Like all the blushes that are dupes for the viral Dior one; the product isn't original, but the fact that it's super in demand and expensive is why folks are looking for similar products? Eh idk!!!!
I found Ann Mashburn from WSJ weekend section and they are my dream pant (5’7” curves/muscular thighs). I’ve worn them dressed up with a blazer and heels and flown transatlantic in them. Price point is also on point!
The travel aspect of the Ann pant is appealing to me. Honestly I don't understand how anyone would wash the High Sport ones; they feel very dry-clean only to me. Which is fine for a dress pant, but confuses me with what is (in theory) supposed to be a casual pick-up-the-kids pant? Idk.
for 2% of the cost of the high sport pants, i’ve surprisingly liked the old navy version (https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=530549032) - which was a substack find (can’t remember where). tried the everlane ones and did not like the side zip.
Oh thank you for this! Adding to my list! And appreciate the note on the zipper. In theory I thought I'd like because it would mean less stretching out than a pull-on pant? But maybe not in practice?
a side zip pant has always been problematic for me [or at least i view it as problematic for my lower half] so it may be more of a me issue than the pants themselves. but i did also think the fabric on the everlane version wasn’t as nice as their regular dream pants [which i have and love].
I have both versions from Everlane. I wish the flare ones were pull on like the plain dream ones. The zipper is annoying to have to use however once it’s on they’re a good fit and the zipper lays flat/doesn’t bother me. I’m a size 6/8 also with post c-section/two kids situation. But I’m glad I got them vs the HS to test out how much I wear this style anyway. So far it’s a lot- but probably not enough for me to justify the HS price tag.
Katie, hands up, I also have the Old Navy cropped kick flare and these fit my non-size-zero-body just like the High Sport in the photo. It's v. forgiving for those of us with thicker legs. ❤️ I got them in the tall length to make my legs longer.
I love my High Sports, but decided to buy the Ann Mashburn pair after reading about them in YOLO. I returned them...they just don't have the same proportions as the HS (the flare on the HS really balances out the hips/booty, while the AM is a bit more narrow and ultimately not as flattering). Interested to read your thoughts!
I haven't received the Ann ones yet, but from reading they seem *quite* different from high sport. And that NYM dupe story might be a misleading way of setting them up?
I too have been obsessing over this topic! I tried the old navy ones and they were ok but I didn't see myself wearing them much so returned. My body type is similar to yours so very interested in what you come up with!!
Loeffler Randall makes a similar pant named Jeanne. They have a side zip so might not be a contender but I'd be interested how they compare. They have a pretty espresso color.
Thank you for your newsletter! Slightly different pants category but very interested to hear your views on Ninepine and Kiragrace. They are all over my social media. Thank you!!!
$900 for a pull-on stretch pant is plain silly, but boy have I been tempted!! Very happy with my Anthro Margot Kick Flare Cropped Pants, give them a try. $98 and lots of colors/patterns. Can't wait for your review, thanks!
Alan Cumming on Traitors is EVERYTHING! His outfits, his theatrics...LOVE! Season 1 is AMAZING if you ever get to watching...the Traitors play it very differently than they do in this seez. That's all I'll say but both seasons are FAB!!!!!
Looking forward to your try-on review for the HS-like pants haul! J Crew released their version the Demi-Boot Cropped Sweater Pants if you haven't tried them already.
I second someone's comment about wallet recommendations. I too am looking for a compact everyday but elegant black wallet.
Have you shared your thoughts on the updated classic ballet flat? Looking for those as well!

I've heard this about the fabric!

I'm new to your space and enjoying it. Can you explore black flat mules?
Sure!

Oooooh thank you for this lead!
The Donni pants are maybe my favorite piece of clothing I own.
I would love a post about wallets please! Currently looking for the perfect small wallet and desperately need recommendations.
