I’m a Hoka girl, but not for fashion, alas! My orthopedic surgeon made me do it, and he wasn’t wrong!

My husband is a surgeon and hokas and ons are his hospital rounding shoes of choice, LOL. More fashionable than medical clogs, but still supportive.

wait tell me more! Doctor recommended shoes?!

Yes! I had a 4 yo and a 6 yo and we needed to get my foot stable enough so that I could wait to have surgery once they didn’t need to be carried places. He told me Hokas were his preference from an orthopedic standpoint and I wore them almost every day for a year and honestly, it made all the difference!

My PT strongly recommended them as well sadly haha

Last year I saw a woman outside the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Manhattan wearing black hokas with ankle length jeans (maybe white? possibly frayed hem? I’m disappointed I don’t remember precisely), a tee and a Chanel jacket and it’s seared in my brain. She managed to make hokas look, dare I say, chic? Maybe it was the jacket bringing the chic, nevertheless, every time I pack for NYC, I think about it. Still not convinced I can pull it off, but it’s out there… And a second on the Clifton.

Which style is the best? I’ve almost bought a pair a few times now.

I think the Clifton’s are a good compromise between cushion and looks. I wore these for a year pre-foot reconstruction. After my surgery I switched to Bondis, which look like rafts attached to your feet but are super comfortable. And I have a pair of Transports now that I use as my “cute sneakers” (🤦🏼‍♀️) but 💯 are not as comfortable as the others! But they do look cuter and despite what my doctor thinks, THAT MATTERS 🤣

I will chime in — yes! Also orthopedist recommended here for a variety of foot and tendon issues. I have Clifton’s and Bondis for walking all over NYC, and alternate wearing them.

If I may jump on the hoka advice bandwagon, do you recommend them for lots of standing/daily activity as well as a shoe for walking?

Love the detailed answer. And cute shoes DO matter because who wants to go anywhere in ugly shoes?! I have hip issues and have heard hokas are good options but there’s so many styles, I get overwhelmed.

I have worn On and Hoka! Ons tread wore out a lot quicker, and Hoka was recommended by my foot doc! Gen Z and youth don’t know how good they have it to be able to wear comfy shoes for going out ! millennial me wore too many heels for “da clerb” and now have sad feet.

Expand full comment
Hillary Kerr's avatar

Idk why “sad feet” made me laugh though I am sorry for this! I wore 4-inch heels every day/all day from like 22-38 which feels bonkers to put it mildly.

I wear On but I really don't think they are anything special. I've found them at Nordstrom Rack on occasion.

I can't get past the super thickness of the Hoka, plus I'm scared of the HUGE branding.

I stumbled on an interesting Reddit post yesterday from an author writing a short story about a woman in her early 30’s, and she was asking what bag this character should wear if she’s trying to impress people in Lower Manhattan haha. The answers were VERY fun to read, but my takeaway was Celine Celine Celine Goyard YSL Celine. lol! I guess it’s the rage! I’ll have to look around when I’m in the city tomorrow and see if I notice this now that it’s been pointed out.

I was surprised by the fact that no other brand was dominating. Hadn't seen this since the Gucci marmot was everywhere.

I love my phoebe philo era celine but I do feel like the triomphe branding is oversaturated at the moment. Excited to see what they come out with under new direction.

Love! When I earned my doctorate I decided to buy myself a chic “doctor bag” to commemorate the achievement. I chose a deep navy phantom with a dark green interior. They discontinued the style one year later. Still love her. Still get so many compliments when I bring her out.

I'm no professional but do study movement & I tried the NB with a Hoka type sole & your toes don't touch as you step forward. How do you maintain toe strength? Yes, they're very cushiony with that thick sole but not sure they're doing your body any favours

Expand full comment
Hillary Kerr's avatar

That was my hunch but also so interesting that so many docs recommend?

Expand full comment
Karin S's avatar

I've become very disappointed in most doctors lack of knowledge in areas like this so not surprised that they recommend this shoe. Recently bought new shoes in my local specialty store & tried the sole in my go to AA New Balance. I got a look like "I know..." when I mentioned the lack of toe contact.

as usual we have to be responsible for our well being & if you're lucky, find someone knowledgeable who understands movement. easier said than done!

I am completely obsessed with Janessa hats and am sad I never pulled the trigger on the Clemence which is now sold out. I am laughing at how much your sneaker question created a stir when, to me, JL products should be what’s creating buzz!!!!

As a lifelong distance runner, I’ve never been able to get on board with the chunky sneakers as fashion trend. My running shoes - loyal asics nimbus wearer since 2007 - are not something I’d ever consider striking outside actual athletic wear

Ons fan. Great to travel in (solid black or solid beige) and so easy to pack. Super light weight and extremely comfortable! I tried the Hokas and thought too much foam. Very bouncy … bulky. Ons super fan

Hoka slides--highly recommend. I have the old version (black) and oddly get compliments all the time. New version is more ostentatious. Still very comfortable. Cannot speak to the laced shoes. I stick with Satorisan or Puma for low profile.

My Hoka AND my ON shoes are such a wardrobe constant that I always have a pair of both, rotate between them ( often daily) based on mood/ activity/ colour prediction and replace regularly at signs of wear and tear! Question- what are we wearing for light coverage on our faces for summer? Needing a tinted moisturizers or light(er) base and feeling unsure. Ideally with spf… and finally do you ever feel lazy about needing to buckle of the Jalen sandals and did you find you had to bring them in? Happy Sunday !
