I Bought Over $1000 Worth of Skims To Try On. Here Are The Pieces That Live Up To The Hype.
Talking bras, undies, shapewear, bralettes, swim, t-shirts, and more...
Hi everyone! Did you hear that sigh of relief? Mercury Retrograde is finally over, as of today, and I couldn’t be more thrilled if you paid me. I have a million things I want to talk about, but I’m going to get straight into today’s topic: My first Skims haul.
To be clear, these are not my first Skims products. My friend Jill gave me the Soft Lounge Long Slipdress ($78) in Onyx a couple of years ago, and I like it very much. Additionally, I have the brand’s Stretch Waist Trainer ($68) in Onyx, which I got after having one of my kids (the exact arrival date of this piece is blurry), and appreciated, as it made my torso feel a little more supported at that moment in time. But while I like both pieces, neither has been a daily driver, and I was curious about all of the other items in the vast Skims collection.
Long story long: I bought 20 pieces—the max you can purchase at one time—from the Skims website, in an array of sizes, styles, and silhouettes. My order included the following: A couple of one-piece swimsuits, two different bodysuits, three types of bras, two types of bralettes, a cami, some sleeping undies (you know what I mean by this, yes?), and some t-shirts.
As I’m guessing you assume by now, everything I bought is black because that is the color that gives me life. I wasn’t sure what size I would be, so I got the bras in 34C and 34D, and then most other pieces in both small and medium.
Typically when I do a bigger purchase like this, I end up keeping only a few pieces because:
a) It’s hard to determine fabric quality online,
b) Sizing varies so much by brand and even garment, I never know what will work, and
c) I have a pretty strict “one in, one out” policy, so if I keep something, it has to be good enough to displace something else in my closet.
Friends, I’m pleasantly surprised to tell you that I want to keep about half of my order. (This is high; on a good day, I might like about 10-15% of any given online order, which means that often I keep nothing at all.) Below, please find my favorite Skims pieces and a few thoughts on why they might be worth your money, too.
SKIMS I LOVED | recommended without reservations
Weightless Scoop Bra ($58) in Onyx / size 34C and 34D
As I have mentioned many, many times, I am still on the hunt for a bra that I like better than my go-to Top Secret Prop Top Bralette ($44), which I have worn almost exclusively for the last six years. (In black, ofc, in a medium.) That said, I was so delighted by this not-padded underwire bra that I ended up keeping it in two sizes. Is it weird to have both a 34C and 34D? Maybe, but they serve different purposes in terms of how they fit and lift, and as I’ve also mentioned many, many times, my body fluctuates a fair amount.
The material is unusual; at first I thought it was just a double-lined situation, as it’s slightly sheer, but it’s actually Skims’s proprietary woven foam, which sounds gross, but actually feels and looks quite modern. The band is made from a super slinky and soft microfiber that is extremely smooth, and I felt like the level of lift was nice without feeling too male-gaze forward, if you know what I mean? 11/10 recommend.
Fits Everybody Unlined Demi Bra ($44) in Onyx / size 34D
This bra surprised me because it really feels like the love child of a t-shirt bra and a push-up bra, but it’s neither? As the name spells out quite plainly, it is technically unlined, but this really felt like a lightly padded bra to me. But keep in mind I’m someone who normally wears either the aforementioned bralettes or lace underwire bras, so anything other than lace feels shockingly thick to me.
I realize this sounds like I don’t like this bra, but I do! At first glance, I thought it had a bit of a matronly vibe, as it appears to be pretty full coverage, but that’s not how it actually looks when you’re wearing it. I like it enough that I’m going to probably try and find it in my skin tone—Kimberly, does this come in mayo?—to wear under white t-shirts. If you’re looking for a bra that’s hardworking and unfussy, but still has a bit of a mischievous twinkle in its eye, this style is for you.
Oh one more thing: I got this one in both a 34C and a 34D, but the latter fit much better. (And yes, I’m just as surprised as you that I wear a D. What can I say? Side boob for the win? Sure.)
Fits Everybody Long Sleeve T-Shirt ($54) in Onyx / size small and medium
If you’re looking for a stretchy (but not strangle-y), super thin, slightly sheer, perfectly perfect long sleeve t-shirt, FOLKS THIS IS IT! I love love love love love it, so much so that I’m keeping both the small and the medium. This is the perfect shirt to style tucked into a skirt for work, paired with wide-leg trousers, or simply just to sleep in. A flawless basic all around.
SKIMS I LIKE VERY MUCH | happily recommended
Fits Everybody Lace Cami ($44) in Onyx / small
As someone who is loud and proud about being Team Bralette, I was hopeful that this cami would be my new BFF. I don’t really know what it’s made out of—76% Polyamide and 24% Elastane says the site, but what does that really mean?—but I can tell you that it’s soft and stretchy, kind of like ultra thin yoga pants, maybe? Yes, that.
My one TBD is the fact that cami is cropped, and I’m not sure how I’m going to like what is essentially a longline bralette over time. Will it ride up eventually? Will I care if it does? Things we cannot know right now! But I’m willing to wait it out. Will keep you posted.
Fits Everybody Hipster ($20) in Onyx / medium
Oh sleeping undies! You can be so hard to find. I’m always looking for a style with slightly fuller coverage, but let’s be honest: Most undies that fall into this category make me feel like I’m wearing either a Victorian diaper or are so “cheeky” I might as well be wearing assless drawers.
The thing I loathe the most is how many styles just want to cut into my soft hips, which is just the worst. I don’t mind having soft hips; I just don’t want them assaulted and hypersquished every time I try to put on a pair of underwear.
Thankfully, these hipster drawers are extremely accommodating and mold to your body in a most comfortable and pleasing way. They’re small, but mighty, and I like them tremendously. My only issue is that they’re the same polyamide and elastane blend as the aforementioned lace cami, so if you’re looking for a super breathable cotton, this ain’t it. But otherwise excellent all around.
Seamless Sculpt Thong Bodysuit ($68) in Onyx / medium
Of all the pieces I ordered, this was probably the one I was most excited about. I’ve seen it on TikTok; everyone love it and screams about how snatched it makes your waist look. I have friends who adore it. So I bought it in two sizes (small and medium) and was excited to join the bodysuit party.
As I mentioned on IGS, if I was a less vain woman, I would love to show you a video of me trying to put it on. You would cry with laughter; I know I did. It took me several minutes to stuff myself in the medium, and frankly I’m not sure it’s the ideal fit, as I have a shorter torso, but I simply couldn’t bring myself to attempt this with a smaller size.
But once I was officially in this compression garment masquerading as a bodysuit, I began to see why so many people are huge fans. It unquestionably smooshes you into a more hourglass-y version of yourself, and I actually think I would have liked this at some point post-kids because your torso feels so incredibly supported.
The one note I have that’s a little sad trombone is while the compression is good in some places, I would say it is perhaps not as ideal if you are someone with, ahem, unadulterated breasts? Especially if those breasts have, say, fed one or more children? Or have spent more than a few decades on this planet? And I’m saying this as someone who made it through two years of breastfeeding relatively unscathed. But this is just one woman’s opinion, so take it with a salt shaker.
Okay, so those are the pieces I very very very much liked and/or loved. And yes, there were things that didn’t work for me (I loved some of the other bralettes, for example, but didn’t like the shape on my body because again, they seem best for implants or platonic ideal breasts), but overall I was quite pleased.
I also think I need to try things from some different collections, like cotton, and I didn’t try the no-show balconette bra, which I think seems up my alley. And I acknowledge I didn’t go down the shapewear rabbit hole, which could be an entire story, too. Anyway, consider this part one of a multi-part Skims try-on, and if there’s another brand or retailer you’d like me to do this with, let me know in the comments below.
Okay friends, that’s it for now. If you want to follow me on @hillarykerr, I’d love it. And if you have anything to say or ask (preferably nothing terribly mean), please drop me a note either via DM or in the comments below.

The cotton sleepwear is my fav. You must try! Love the boyfriend tees and boxers, sleep in color sets and also mix and match!
I'd love to get your thoughts on Cuup! I keep hearing about their bras but haven't had an opportunity to try yet. I'll also say I'm a big fan of Negative underwear if you haven't tried them yet.
